About
The Brunet Lab in the Department of Genetics at Stanford University studies how genetic, epigenetic and metabolic factors regulate ageing, working across C. elegans, the African turquoise killifish, mice and human cells. Its research asks how diet and nutrient-sensing pathways such as FOXO and AMPK set lifespan, how environmental signals leave lasting chromatin-based memories, including transgenerational inheritance of longevity in worms, why adult neural stem cells lose regenerative capacity with age and how they can be rejuvenated, and whether the ageing brain can be restored. The lab developed the killifish, the shortest-lived vertebrate kept in the laboratory, into a genetic model for vertebrate ageing and suspended animation (diapause), and built genomic and CRISPR tools used by other groups. Brunet directs Stanford's Glenn Center for the Biology of Aging. The work links conserved longevity pathways to brain and stem-cell ageing in vertebrates.
