About

The NIA Intramural Research Program is the in-house research arm of the US National Institute on Aging. It traces its origins to Nathan Shock's NIH gerontology unit of 1941, later the Gerontology Research Center, and runs the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging, begun in 1958 and described by NIA as America's longest-running scientific study of human aging, as well as the HANDLS health-disparities cohort. NIA describes the programme as seven scientific laboratories, the Translational Gerontology Branch, the Center for Alzheimer's and Related Dementias (CARD, established 2020 with NINDS) and nine core facilities. Most laboratories are at the Biomedical Research Center on the Johns Hopkins Bayview campus in Baltimore; the Laboratory of Neurogenetics and CARD are in Bethesda. Stated priorities are neuroscience, aging biology, immunosenescence and translational gerontology, including caloric restriction, cellular senescence and mitochondrial function.
