Impact
Arlan Richardson is Professor of Biochemistry and Physiology and Donald W. Reynolds Endowed Chair of Aging Research at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and a Senior VA Career Scientist at the Oklahoma City VA Medical Center, and has worked in ageing research for about four decades. His research has examined the effects of ageing and dietary restriction on gene expression in rats and mice, tested the oxidative stress theory of ageing by altering antioxidant defences in transgenic and knockout mice and measuring lifespan and pathology, and studied the effect of rapamycin on ageing and age-related disease. Current work addresses oxidative stress, necroptosis and inflammation in ageing, including neuronal necroptosis in the ageing brain, and how genotype and level of restriction shape the effects of dietary restriction. He is lead co-PI on a VA-funded project developing a genetically heterogeneous rat model (OKC-HET B/W) for testing anti-ageing interventions. He has authored more than 240 peer-reviewed papers, received the Nathan Shock, Kleemeier, Harman and Irving Wright awards, and has served as president of the Gerontological Society of America and the American Aging Association and on the National Advisory Council on Aging.
