Carlos López-Otín

Impact

Carlos López-Otín is a Spanish biochemist and molecular biologist whose work spans cancer, hereditary diseases and ageing. For the longevity field he is best known as first author of "The Hallmarks of Aging" (Cell, 2013), written with Maria Blasco, Linda Partridge, Manuel Serrano and Guido Kroemer, which proposed nine candidate hallmarks of ageing and became a widely used organising framework; the same group published an expanded update, "Hallmarks of aging: An expanding universe", in 2023. With Kroemer he also co-authored the reviews "Metabolic Control of Longevity" (Cell, 2016, with Frank Madeo and others) and "Hallmarks of Health" (Cell, 2021). According to Universidad Nebrija, his research has identified and named about 60 genes, and his recent efforts focus on conceptual models and global approaches to health and ageing, including psychosocial isolation as a proposed ageing factor. He has received the FEBS European Prize for Biochemistry, the Spanish National Research Prize Santiago Ramón y Cajal and the Rey Jaime I Prize. He held a long-standing chair at the Universidad de Oviedo; 2026 papers list the Universidad Nebrija (Madrid) and the Centre de Recherche des Cordeliers (Paris).
