Impact

Cornelia Weyand is a rheumatologist and immunologist at Mayo Clinic, where she is Professor of Medicine and of Immunology and Research Chair in the Division of Rheumatology, and Professor of Medicine, Emerita, at Stanford University, where she previously led the Division of Immunology and Rheumatology (2013-2019). Her research addresses how immune cells become pro-inflammatory, disease-inducing effector cells, with a focus on rheumatoid arthritis, large-vessel vasculitis such as giant cell arteritis, and immune dysfunction in coronary artery disease. Her group studies immunometabolism, including how mitochondria, lysosomes and the endoplasmic reticulum regulate metabolic fluxes in inflammatory cells, and immune checkpoints in vasculitis, and has developed a humanised 'immune avatar' mouse model that grafts human joint and vascular tissue for testing immune interventions. For the longevity field, she and long-time collaborator Jorg Goronzy are known for work on immune aging, including recent reviews on immune responses in aging adults (Journal of Clinical Investigation, 2026), immune aging in rheumatoid arthritis, metabolic exhaustion and immune ageing in rheumatoid arthritis (Nature Reviews Rheumatology, 2026), and the argument that sustained immune youth carries autoimmune risk in the aging host (Nature Aging, 2025).
