Impact
Daniela Bakula studies how genomic instability contributes to ageing and helps run one of the field's main meetings on translating ageing biology into drugs. She trained in autophagy research at the University of Tübingen, where her PhD work on human WIPI proteins included a first-author 2017 Nature Communications paper showing that WIPI3 and WIPI4 act as scaffolds linking autophagy to LKB1-AMPK-TSC signalling. She then joined Morten Scheibye-Knudsen's group at the University of Copenhagen, which studies the cellular and organismal consequences of DNA damage. She co-authored work establishing nuclear morphology as a deep-learning biomarker of cellular senescence (Nature Aging, 2022), and in 2026 she co-wrote a Science perspective with Scheibye-Knudsen that reconsiders how the heritability of human ageing is estimated. She has co-organised the Aging Research and Drug Discovery (ARDD) meeting in Copenhagen since 2020. She co-authors its annual meeting reports and reviews on clinical trials and pharmacological interventions targeting ageing. She is also an associate editor of Frontiers in Aging.
