Gary Churchill is a statistical geneticist at The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine, where he holds the Karl Gunnar Johansson Endowed Chair. His laboratory takes a systems approach to the genetics of health and disease in the mouse, developing statistical methods and software for quantitative trait locus mapping and gene-expression analysis. He has been involved in establishing two genetically diverse mouse resources for complex-trait analysis, the Collaborative Cross and the Diversity Outbred population. In aging research, these resources underpin large lifespan studies in which genetic background can be analysed alongside interventions. A 2024 Nature study, with Churchill as senior author, assessed graded caloric restriction (20% and 40%) and intermittent fasting in 960 genetically diverse female mice, finding that lifespan extension scaled with the degree of restriction, that genetics influenced lifespan more than diet, and that health effects did not consistently track lifespan gains. Related work has mapped longevity-associated loci across Diversity Outbred studies (Genetics, 2025) and linked longitudinal body-weight traits to lifespan (Nature Communications, 2026). For longevity research, his work applies population-scale mouse genetics to testing how genetic diversity shapes responses to anti-aging interventions.
