Impact

George Sutphin is a biologist of aging at the University of Arizona whose laboratory aims to identify molecular processes that can be targeted to slow aging and extend healthy lifespan. The lab combines systems and comparative genetics in C. elegans, mice and cultured cells to find genes that influence longevity and to understand how they interact with known aging pathways and environmental variables such as temperature. Through this approach his group identified the kynurenine pathway of tryptophan metabolism as a candidate intervention target for slowing aging, and has examined its links to NAD+ synthesis and mitochondrial function; current projects test kynurenine pathway interventions on longevity, on cancer onset during normal aging and on established cancer. The lab also develops high-content methods for drug and genetic screening in the context of aging. He is a scientific member of the Arizona Center on Aging and a research member of the University of Arizona Cancer Center. For longevity readers he represents a translational, screening-oriented model-organism approach to identifying metabolic targets for geroprotective drugs.
