Guido Kroemer

Impact

Guido Kroemer is a cell biologist whose work spans mitochondrial control of cell death, autophagy and ageing, and immune responses to cancer therapy. For the longevity field he is best known as a co-author, with Carlos López-Otín, Maria Blasco, Linda Partridge and Manuel Serrano, of "The Hallmarks of Aging" (Cell, 2013) and its 2023 update, a framework widely used to organise ageing research. With Frank Madeo he co-authored studies showing that the polyamine spermidine induces autophagy and extends lifespan in model organisms (Nature Cell Biology, 2009) and is cardioprotective in ageing mice (Nature Medicine, 2016). He directs the Metabolomics and Cell Biology platforms at Gustave Roussy, heads the Inserm team "Metabolism, Cancer and Immunity", is deputy director of the Cordeliers Research Centre, and is a professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris. Gustave Roussy reports more than 1,700 publications. He is editor-in-chief of several journals, including Cell Stress and Microbial Cell, and a member of academies including EMBO and the Leopoldina.
