Impact
Linda P. Fried is a geriatrician and population scientist who directs the Robert N. Butler Columbia Aging Center and was Dean of Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health from 2008 to 2025. Her research defined frailty as a clinical syndrome and examined its causes, together with the causes, consequences and prevention of disability, loneliness and chronic disease in older age. At Johns Hopkins, where she was Mason F. Lord Professor of Geriatric Medicine and founding director of the Center on Aging and Health, she led cohort studies including the Cardiovascular Health Study and the Women's Health and Aging Studies I and II. She co-designed and co-founded Experience Corps, an evidence-based senior volunteer programme intended to improve children's school outcomes and volunteers' health. She co-chaired the 2022 National Academy of Medicine report 'Global Roadmap for Healthy Longevity' and argues that investing in longer lives can yield a 'Third Demographic Dividend'. She is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and a past President of the Association of American Physicians. For the longevity field she connects geroscience with frailty research, public health and policy for ageing societies.
