Paola Sebastiani

Impact

Paola Sebastiani is a biostatistician at Tufts Medical Center and Tufts University, where she directs the Center for Quantitative Methods and Data Sciences in the Institute for Clinical Research and Health Policy Studies and the Tufts CTSI Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design (BERD) Center. Before joining Tufts in 2020 she held faculty posts in Italy, the UK and at Boston University. Her methodological work spans Bayesian statistics, decision theory, machine learning and experimental design, and she introduced Bayesian techniques for genomic and genetic data analysis and network models of the genetic basis of sickle cell anaemia complications. In longevity research she collaborates on studies of centenarians and long-lived families, including the Long Life Family Study. Recent work includes evidence of increased genetic protection against Alzheimer's disease in centenarians, a bank of induced pluripotent stem cells from centenarians and their offspring, studies of cognitive resilience in long-lived families, and a 2026 cross-cohort analysis linking exceptional parental longevity to later onset of morbidity and mortality.
