Impact

Paul Robbins is Professor of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics at the University of Minnesota, where he helps lead the Masonic Institute on the Biology of Aging and Metabolism and directs the Minnesota Nathan Shock Center of Excellence on Genome Integrity and Aging. Early in his career he helped identify enhancer elements that regulate transcription at a distance, showed that the retinoblastoma tumour suppressor regulates transcription, and developed gene therapies for autoimmune disease, including one in clinical testing for osteoarthritis. In ageing research he was part of the collaborative team that first identified senotherapeutic compounds and biologics able to reduce senescent-cell burden and extend healthspan and lifespan in mice; senotherapeutics are now being tested in clinical trials for age-related conditions. His laboratory targets hallmarks of ageing including genomic instability, senescence, inflammation, stem cell and mitochondrial dysfunction, with projects on optimising senotherapeutics, mapping senescent cells across tissues within the NIH SenNet Consortium, stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles as therapeutics, IKK/NF-κB signalling in DNA damage-induced senescence, longevity-associated rare variants in centenarians, and immune ageing.
