Impact
Peter Rabinovitch, MD, PhD, is a pathologist and ageing researcher whose laboratory uses mouse models to study how enhancing mitochondrial function affects lifespan and healthspan. His group showed that transgenic mice overexpressing catalase targeted to mitochondria live longer and are protected against several age-related conditions, including cardiac ageing, sarcopenia and some cancers, and that similar benefits follow treatment with the mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide elamipretide (SS-31). A central interest has been how mitochondrial energetics interact with signalling pathways that confer resistance to cardiac hypertrophy and failure. He was the founding director of the University of Washington Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging, has been funded by the NIA since 1981, including as PI of an ageing Program Project since 2004, and directed the university's flow cytometry laboratory from 1986 to 2020. He is now Professor Emeritus in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology and continues to publish, including a 2026 paper on SS-31 and cardiomyoblast senescence. His honours include the American Aging Association's Denham Harman Lifetime Achievement Award and AAAS fellowship.
