Impact
Richard A. Miller, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Pathology at the University of Michigan, where he directs the Paul F. Glenn Center for Biology of Aging Research and holds a research professorship in the Institute of Gerontology. His work focuses on interventions that slow ageing in mice and on the biology of long-lived mice. He was senior author of the multi-site 2009 Nature study showing that rapamycin fed late in life extended lifespan in genetically heterogeneous mice, an influential result that helped establish mTOR inhibition as a candidate anti-ageing strategy, and he continues to co-author multi-site mouse lifespan intervention studies and proteomic analyses of longevity-promoting interventions (Geroscience, 2024). He trained at Haverford College and Yale University (MD and PhD), and has been at Michigan since 1990. He served as one of the Editors-in-Chief of Aging Cell and in advisory roles for the American Federation for Aging Research and the National Institute on Aging. His awards include the Nathan Shock Award, the Irving Wright Award, a Glenn Foundation award and the Kleemeier Award; he is a Fellow of the AAAS and a member of the Association of American Physicians.
