About

The Institute for Geroscience at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, formerly the Institute for Aging Research, was established in 2001. It is a membership institute that links more than 60 Einstein faculty and 40 external investigators. Research is organised into human longevity studies, mechanisms of cellular aging (autophagy, senescence, stem cell exhaustion), functional genomics and genome maintenance, integrative physiology, and gerotherapeutic interventions. Its human studies include the Longevity Genes Project, which has followed centenarians and their offspring since 1997, the LonGenity cohort (2007) and the LifeLong study (2019). Together they have enrolled more than 3,000 participants. Einstein sponsored the MILES metformin trial. Through the BIO-VITAL programme, the institute offers its aging research cores to biotech and pharmaceutical companies. Nir Barzilai directs the institute and Ana Maria Cuervo is co-director.
