Impact
Sofiya Milman is an endocrinologist and clinical investigator who studies the biology of human longevity through centenarians and their families, a population generally free of age-related diseases in which healthy longevity appears heritable. At Albert Einstein College of Medicine she is Professor of Medicine and of Genetics, Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine, and Director of Human Longevity Studies at the Institute for Aging Research. Her team conducts translational research on genomic mechanisms that regulate endocrine and metabolic pathways protecting against diabetes, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's disease. A central theme is the somatotropic (growth hormone/IGF-1) axis: her work showed that lower IGF-1 levels were associated with longer survival and better cognition in people with exceptional longevity, and provided evidence against giving growth hormone to older adults to delay ageing. With Nir Barzilai and others she has published on compression of morbidity in exceptionally long-lived cohorts and on using the genetics of extreme human longevity to guide drug discovery for healthy ageing (Nature Metabolism, 2020). Her team combines computational analysis of genetic data with clinical phenotyping.
