About
The Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing in Cologne is a basic-research institute of the Max Planck Society, founded in 2007-2008, whose mission is to understand the natural ageing process and how to intervene against age-related disease. Its researchers use nematodes, fruit flies, mice and the African turquoise killifish, as well as clinical samples. Three departments are currently listed: Molecular Genetics of Ageing (Adam Antebi), Mitochondrial Proteostasis (Thomas Langer) and Neurobiology of Ageing (Anne Schaefer, managing director), alongside eleven research laboratories and several associated groups. Founding director Linda Partridge's department ran from 2008 to 2023. The institute is part of a regional ageing-research network with the University of Cologne's CECAD Cluster of Excellence and the Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research, together with the Bonn-based Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology of Behavior and DZNE (German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases), and states an aim of linking basic findings to clinical research.
