Aubrey de Grey

Impact

Aubrey de Grey is a biomedical gerontologist who proposed the Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence (SENS), a framework that groups age-related molecular and cellular damage into seven categories and argues each could be repaired therapeutically. He set this out in academic papers and in the book Ending Aging (2007, with Michael Rae). He co-founded the Methuselah Foundation (2001), which ran the Methuselah Mouse Prize, and SENS Research Foundation (2009), which funded rejuvenation research and helped launch companies including Cyclarity and Oisín Biotechnologies. He edited the journal Rejuvenation Research from 2004 until 2022 and organised the SENS conference series and later longevity meetings. In 2022 he founded the LEV Foundation, where he is President and Chief Science Officer; its flagship Robust Mouse Rejuvenation programme tests combinations of interventions in mice. He holds a PhD in biology from the University of Cambridge.
