Joan Mannick is a physician and drug developer known for early clinical trials of mTOR inhibition as a way to target ageing biology in humans. While an Executive Director in the New Indications Discovery Unit at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, she led studies reporting that the mTOR inhibitor everolimus improved vaccine responses in older adults (Science Translational Medicine, 2014) and that low-dose TORC1 inhibition enhanced immune function and reduced infections in the elderly (Science Translational Medicine, 2018). She co-founded and served as Chief Medical Officer of resTORbio, a spinout of that Novartis programme that developed TORC1 inhibitors for ageing-related conditions, and later was Head of Research and Development at Life Biosciences. She then co-founded and led, as CEO, Tornado Therapeutics, a Cambrian Bio subsidiary developing rapamycin analogues licensed from Novartis. In August 2025 she joined Altos Labs as Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Product Development, providing medical and scientific leadership for its clinical programmes. Earlier she was a Medical Director at Genzyme and a faculty member at Harvard Medical School and the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
