Impact

Marco Demaria studies cellular senescence, the state in which damaged cells stop dividing and secrete inflammatory factors, and its roles in ageing, tissue repair and the side effects of cancer therapy. As a postdoctoral fellow with Judith Campisi at the Buck Institute from 2010, he developed tools and mouse models to track senescent cells in vivo; this work showed that senescent cells help optimal wound healing through secretion of PDGF-AA (Developmental Cell, 2014). Since 2015 he has led the Laboratory of Cellular Senescence and Age-Related Pathologies at ERIBA in Groningen, where his group works on molecular mechanisms and biomarkers of senescence, including how hypoxia restrains the senescence-associated secretory phenotype and how CDK4/6 inhibitors induce senescence. He co-authored the 2019 Cell consensus paper on defining cellular senescence. He is Professor of Cellular Ageing and Senescence at the University Medical Center Groningen and directs its Institute for Mechanisms of Health, Ageing and Disease. In 2018 he co-founded Cleara Biotech, which develops drugs that target senescent cells. He is Editor-in-Chief of Aging-US and President of the International Cell Senescence Association.
