Impact

Matt Kaeberlein is a biogerontologist whose research has focused on biological mechanisms of aging with the goal of translational interventions that extend healthspan. After a PhD at MIT (2002) and postdoctoral work at the University of Washington, he joined the UW faculty, where he was the founding director of the Healthy Aging and Longevity Research Institute, director of the UW Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging and director of an aging-biology training programme; he has published more than 200 papers and is a fellow of AAAS, the American Aging Association and the Gerontological Society of America. He is founder and co-director of the Dog Aging Project, a research project on aging in companion dogs. In 2023 he co-founded Optispan, a Seattle healthspan-medicine company, and led it as CEO until April 2026, when he announced he was no longer with the company and was considering his next step. He also communicates longevity science to the public through podcast, video and social-media channels.
