Impact
Pura Muñoz-Cánoves studies how skeletal muscle stem cells age and lose regenerative capacity. Her laboratory showed that at geriatric age, quiescent muscle stem cells undergo proteostatic failure that leads to senescence, altered circadian functions and impaired regeneration, work that reshaped how the field views adult stem-cell dormancy and its link to tissue ageing. She has been a Principal Investigator at Altos Labs in San Diego since 2022, as part of its Discovery Science team. Before that she was an ICREA Professor and Professor of Cell Biology at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, and a Senior Scientist at the Spanish National Cardiovascular Research Center (CNIC) in Madrid; 2026 papers still list a Pompeu Fabra co-affiliation. Her honours include the King Jaume I Prize (2019), Spain's National Prize Santiago Ramón y Cajal in Biomedicine (2021), ERC awards, and membership of EMBO, Academia Europaea and the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences.
