Impact
Brian Kennedy is a biogerontologist whose research addresses mechanisms of biological ageing and interventions that extend healthspan and lifespan. During his PhD with Leonard Guarente at MIT he published the first paper linking sirtuins to ageing, showing that mutation of the silencing gene SIR4 can delay aging in yeast (Cell, 1995). As a faculty member at the University of Washington (2001-2010) his group, with collaborators, used genome-scale yeast screens to identify long-lived gene deletions and showed roles for TOR signalling in yeast replicative and chronological lifespan; in mice he studied the mTOR pathway, including rapamycin rescue of lamin A/C-deficient models. He was President and CEO of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging from 2010 to 2016 and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Aging Cell from 2011 to 2021, and co-authored the 2014 Cell perspective that framed geroscience as linking ageing to chronic disease. Since 2017 he has been Distinguished Professor at the National University of Singapore, where he directs the Healthy Longevity Translational Research Programme and the Bia-Echo Asia Centre for Reproductive Longevity and Equality, and the NUHS Centre for Healthy Longevity. Recent work includes ageing biomarkers, clinical ageing clocks and human intervention studies such as alpha-ketoglutarate supplementation.
