Impact

Jan Gruber is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the National University of Singapore's Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and part of its Healthy Longevity Translational Research Program. Trained in physics and applied mathematics at RWTH Aachen and Cambridge, he completed a DPhil in biochemistry at Oxford before moving to NUS, where he has run a laboratory since 2014. His early work used C. elegans to test the role of mitochondria and free radicals in ageing, including studies of mitochondria-targeted antioxidants and of oxidative-damage biomarkers, and a review of the mitochondrial free radical theory of ageing. More recent publications apply computational and physics-based approaches to ageing, including 'Foundations of Gerophysics', a pathology-trained lipid ageing clock, single-cell analyses of nonlinear immune ageing, and a proposal to reframe biological age as risk-equivalent age. He is listed on the team of the ageing-biotech company Gero, whose framework for classifying ageing interventions is named the Fedichev-Gruber theory. For the longevity field he works on quantitative definitions of biological age and on theory for choosing intervention strategies.
